Next week, the comic strip Doonesbury is tackling the issue of abortion and newspapers are struggling with the decision about whether to carry the strip or give Doonesbury the week off. It’s not the leftwing slant on the issue from cartoonist Gary Trudeau that bothers them. It’s the language he uses.

Here we go again. Every time we try to discuss something important in this country, the debate gets tangled up in language and ad hominem attacks. Nothing serious can be discussed, because everybody is shrieking about how offended they are...
