Keating Five - 1989

"The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s... Lincoln Savings and Loan collapsed in 1989, at a cost of over $3 billion to the federal government. Some 23,000 Lincoln bondholders were defrauded and many investors lost their life savings. The substantial political contributions Keating had made to each of the senators, totaling $1.3 million, attracted considerable public and media attention. After a lengthy investigation, the Senate Ethics Committee determined in 1991 that Cranston, DeConcini, and Riegle had substantially and improperly interfered with the FHLBB's investigation of Lincoln Savings, with Cranston receiving a formal reprimand. Senators Glenn and McCain were cleared of having acted improperly but were criticized for having exercised poor judgment."

In November Ms. Gordon was defeated by her Republican challenger Sue Rezin. When the lame duck legislature pushed through the largest tax increase in Illinois history during the final hours of the session, Careen Gordon cast her vote in favor of the toxic tax hike (the bill passed without a single vote to spare). Immediately after his inauguration, Governor Pat Quinn signed the tax hike into law and nominated Ms. Gordon to a high-paying job on the Illinois Prison Review Board."

Gore set to make millions off green legislation - November 2, 2009

"The deal appeared to pay off in a big way last week, when the Energy Department announced $3.4 billion in smart grid grants. Of the total, more than $560 million went to utilities with which Silver Spring has contracts. Kleiner Perkins and its partners, including Mr. Gore, could recoup their investment many times over in coming years."

35 Inconvenient Truths in Al Gore's movie - October 19, 2007

"Readers of the long list of errors described in this memorandum will decide for themselves whether Mr. Gore was acting in good faith. However, in this connection it is significant that each of the 35 errors listed below misstates the conclusions of the scientific literature or states that there is a threat where there is none or exaggerates the threat where there may be one. All of the errors point in one direction – towards undue alarmism. Not one of the errors falls in the direction of underestimating the degree of concern in the scientific community. The likelihood that all 35 of the errors listed below could have fallen in one direction purely by inadvertence is less than 1 in 34 billion."

Gore not as green as he preaches - December 7, 2006

(He also has a third home in Carthage, Tenn.) For someone rallying the planet to pursue a path of extreme personal sacrifice, Gore requires little from himself."

Al Gore's Teapot Dome scandal - August 29, 2000

"Nowhere is Al Gore's environmental hypocrisy more glaring than when it comes to his relationship with Occidental. While on the one hand talking tough about his "big oil" opponents and waxing poetic about indigenous peoples in his 1992 book "Earth in the Balance," the Elk Hills sale and other deals show that money has always been more important to Al Gore than ideals."

Gore's oil money - May 3, 2000

"District Mayor Vincent C. Gray oon Sunday acknowledged "missteps" and said he wants the city attorney general and the D.C. Council to investigate allegations that aides to his campaign paid mayoral candidate Sulaimon Brown last summer to continue his attacks on then-Mayor Adrian M. Fenty in exchange for a city job." [Hires Bill Clinton's lawyer.]

Sweet jobs for friends and supporters - February 22, 2011

"Last week, it was revealed that one of Gray's campaign supporters, Cherita Whiting, gained a sweet job as a special assistant in the city's parks and recreation department reporting only to the agency's chief of staff. The fact that Whiting got the job outside of the normal civil service hiring process -- and that 200 other administration posts are being filled the same way -- merely adds to a growing perception that Gray wants to run city government like a jobs program." [More here.]

Vazquez-Botet, Granados-Navedo and Morell-Corrada demanded more than $2 million from the contractors for assistance in securing and preserving their contracts."

Alan Mark Grayson

U.S. Congressman (Florida)

Bills taxpayers for campaign DVD - July 29, 2010

"In many ways, it's the perfect campaign video — with one key difference. Thanks to perks given to all members of Congress, it's not Grayson's campaign but taxpayers who footed the nearly $73,000 bill to produce and mail the DVD to 100,000 homes in Grayson's district of Lake, Marion, Orange and Osceola counties."

Sics AG on blogger critic - December 18, 2009

Stacks townhall meeting - August 18, 2009

"Another Florida democrat, Alan Grayson, stacked a “townhall” meeting last night with union reps and democrats in another attempt to keep critics out of their meetings. Grayson conveniently held the meeting right after a local democratic party meeting where members kept their seats in an effort to reduce critics from getting in."

Nominee for U.S. Senate (South Carolina, 2010)

Indicted on obscenity charges - August 14, 2010

King County settles public records lawsuit - April 24, 2009

"King County has now settled my public records lawsuit for $225,000, one of the largest settlements for public records violations in state history. The lawsuit stemmed from my December 2004 request for a list of all voters who voted in the November 2004 election. The county did not satisfy my request in full until January 2007. The documents that they eventually provided to me revealed that county election officials unlawfully counted hundreds of ineligible ballots in the 2004 election: a multiple of Christine Gregoire's 133-vote "margin of victory" over Dino Rossi..."

"Rajat Gupta, a consummate business insider who once sat on the board of Goldman Sachs Group Inc, was convicted on Friday of leaking secrets about the investment bank at the height of the financial crisis, a major victory for prosecutors seeking to root out illicit trading on Wall Street." [Sentenced to two years in prison.]

What the hell was Rajat Gupta thinking? - October 28, 2011

"As Walter Russell Mead says, as CEO of McKinsey & Co., Gupta was one of the most trusted men in global capitalism. He sat at the Ground Zero of American finance and consulting -- the two biggest growth industries of our service economy. He made piles of money too. But, according to the United States Attorney and a grand jury sitting in the Southern District of New York, there's admissible, credible evidence to show probable cause to believe that Gupta's also a crook." [More here.]

"You can clearly see Halvorson’s campaign manager Julie Merz sitting in the window chuckling with the team as the wind-down after a long night of hanging out with people who like depicting the former Vice-Presidential candidate as a mass-murdering fascist."

Lies about political opponent - July 20, 2010

"Kinzinger's military record is impressive, it's solid, and it deserves respect, not denigration. Halvorson should battle for the issues she believes in, not drag a worthy opponent through the muck and mire."

"Did a Democratic member of Congress improperly enlist the support of a major pro-Israel lobbying group to try to win a top committee assignment? That's the question at the heart of an ongoing investigation by the FBI and Justice Department prosecutors, who are examining whether Rep. Jane Harman of California and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) may have violated the law in a scheme to get Harman reappointed as the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee..."

The attorney who provided the bribe went to prison and Hastings went free because his accomplice refused to testify against him. His ultimate impeachment and removal from the bench was quite bipartisan."

The trouble with Hastings - November 21, 2006

"A jury acquitted Hastings of criminal charges stemming from the scandal, but in 1989 a team of lawmakers -- including Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), among others -- prosecuted Hastings in Congress, and the Senate voted to strip him of his judgeship."

Panel to seek impeachment of judge - July 8, 1988

"A subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee voted unanimously today to recommend the impeachment of Federal District Judge Alcee L. Hastings for 17 ''high crimes and misdemeanors,'' including perjuring himself to win his 1983 acquittal on charges of conspiracy to take a bribe."

Robert Novak: In my opinion, they should have. They sent two reporters down to West Virginia for six weeks and they came back with a carefully documented story on voter fraud in West Virginia, buying votes, and how he beat Humphrey in the primary and therefore got the nomination. I couldn’t get a firm impression on the Vietnamese survivors in the village, since I don’t know how to read the cultural cues. But Knapp wore a level gaze, spoke quietly, no trace of whining or wheedling in his voice. Kerrey didn’t say, "I didn’t do that." His answer was often the legalistic, "That incident is not in my memory." I found that disturbing."

Getting rich(er) from inside information - May 3, 2012

"The five-term Senator has a well-documented history of investing in companies that would benefit from policies he supports, as well as making conveniently timed and highly profitable trades coinciding with the passage of major legislation and, in some cases, the dissemination of privileged information."

Kerry's swift boat hatchet man is a fake - August 19, 2011

"Last August, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus revoked a Silver Star medal formerly held by retired Navy Captain Wade R. Sanders. In a short, vague memorandum to the Chief of Naval Personnel, Mabus cited "subsequently determined facts and evidence surrounding both the incident for which the award was made and the processing of the award itself" as the reason. Such an action by the Navy is virtually without precedent." [More here.]

Tax dodger hypocrite - July 29, 2010

"Last week the Boston Herald reported that in March Kerry registered his $7 million yacht not in Boston, where he lives, but in Newport, R.I. Mystery surrounds Navy discharge - October 13, 2004

"What was being reviewed, then, was Mr. Kerry's involuntary separation from the service. And it couldn't have been an honorable discharge, or there would have been no point in any review at all. The review was likely held to improve Mr. Kerry's status of discharge from a less than honorable discharge to an honorable discharge."

Navy probes Kerry medal - September 3, 2004

Kwame Malik Kilpatrick

Former Mayor (Detroit, 2002-2008)

The Legacy of Kwame Kilpatrick - August 5, 2011

"By early 2008, demolition was a foregone conclusion, and it came time for the city to hand out a contract. By then, insiders noticed that most big-money city contracts were going to Bobby Ferguson, the son of legendary Detroit contractor Homer Ferguson, and a family friend to Mayor Kilpatrick. Kwame had recently held up a $50 million sewer-lining contract until the winning bidder agreed to pay Ferguson, and then inflated the contract to a ridiculous $137 million so that Ferguson -- who did no work on the project -- could walk away with a $24.7 million cut."

More charges for Kilpatrick? - June 25, 2010

"If federal authorities believe businessmen ensnared in the long-running investigation of City Hall corruption, Kwame Kilpatrick did a lot more than tap into his nonprofit Kilpatrick Civic Fund to support a high-flying lifestyle."

Indictments for fraud and tax evasion - June 23, 2010

Kilpatrick pleads guilty to two felonies - September 4, 2008

"In a rushed monotone, before a standing-room only audience, Kilpatrick told Wayne Circuit Judge David Groner: "I lied under oath in the case of Gary Brown and Harold Nelthrope versus the city of Detroit ... Brett Kimberlin

Democrat political activist

Quotes from “Citizen K: The Deeply Weird American" - June 25, 2012

"I already knew that I was listening to someone who, as a teenager, had been convicted of perjury; that he had progressed from small-time marijuana dealer to big-time marijuana smuggler; that in the late seventies he was regarded as suspect, though never charged, in a murder case that was never solved; and that in 1981, after a protracted prosecution in Indianapolis that included several bizarre elements, he was convicted of six apparently motiveless bombings in the town of Speedway, Indiana, the last of which left a man severely maimed. (In all, eight bombs detonated, but the government based its case on only six.) — P.8"

Pleads guilty to accepting bribes, resigns - December 20, 2011

"He could not control his emotions, mumbling and sobbing as he admitted abusing his position and detailed his crimes: bribery schemes in which he accepted nearly half a million dollars in exchange for taking official action as a senator. Beside him, separated by one of Mr. Kruger’s lawyers, sat the gynecologist who court papers suggested was the senator’s intimate companion; he, too, would weep uncontrollably as he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge a few minutes later." [Crybaby.]

Tried to interfere with FBI probe - March 12, 2011

"Crooked state Sen. Carl Kruger launched a frenzied, paranoid bid to botch the FBI's probe into his bribery shenanigans in the weeks before his bust, authorities say. Convicted on all counts - October 28, 2009

"Larry Langford, the controversial and flamboyant mayor of Birmingham, Ala., was convicted of multiple counts of bribery in a federal corruption trial in Tuscaloosa on Wednesday. A jury took less than two hours to determine that as president of the Jefferson County Commission, Mr. Langford accepted more than $230,000 in cash, expensive clothing and jewelry in exchange for steering $7.1 million in county bond business to a prominent investment banker. The bonds and debt restructuring destabilized the finances of the county, which includes Birmingham, and its sewer system, helping to push the county to the brink of bankruptcy last year. Under Alabama law, the felony convictions automatically terminated Mr. Langford’s mayoralty."

Arrested - December 1, 2008

"Federal authorities arrested the mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, on Monday in a corruption probe surrounding a sewer bond debt that could lead to the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Authorities arrested Mayor Larry Langford in Birmingham at 7 a.m. (1200 GMT) and charged him with 60 counts including bribery, money laundering, conspiracy and filing false tax returns, according to U.S. Attorney Alice Martin." Charities collected thousands from vendors - April 13, 2008

"Two private charities controlled by Larry Langford collected hundreds of thousands of dollars from businessmen and companies he approved for government work as Fairfield mayor and Jefferson County Commission president, records show. Langford, now Birmingham's mayor, spent some of the money on annual $5,000 scholarships, contributions to other nonprofit groups and a black-tie fundraising dinner each fall for hundreds of guests. It's not clear how the rest of the money was spent because Langford has declined The Birmingham News' requests to release financial records for his Mayor's Scholarship Charity and the Larry Langford Celebrity Shoot for Charity."

William Lantigua

Mayor (Lawrence, Massachusetts)

The most corrupt mayor in America? - August 18, 2012

"Last week, he got married to his mistress, who was a City Hall secretary and one of the many people who got grilled by a grand jury over Willie’s shady dealings. And when I say “shady dealings” I mean stuff like alleged bid rigging, suspicious out-of-state travel, illegal swapping of city-owned cars, and corruption and campaign finance violations. Luckily for Willie under Massachusetts law the new Mrs. Lantigua doesn't have to tesitfy against him if he's formally charged with anything. It's her "spousal privledge" as his wife to refuse to testify, which probably had nothing to do with their eloping."

Recall effort amidst corruption charges - April 27, 2011

"Jenice Astorga looked at the poorly manicured grass on the common across from City Hall and the pocked streets nearby and said she was fed up with the year-old administration of Mayor William Lantigua, who took over this old mill city last year and has become mired in charges of corruption."
